Ethan and Joel Coen are a talented pair of brothers who make films. They have a unique artistic vision and in addition to directing generally write and produce their own films too. They first found serious acclaim with the incredible Fargo in 1996 having made some excellent films which failed to smash the box office.
The Coens have retained final cut on all of their films and this refusal to compromise undoubtedly contributes to the final productions. The Coen's create amazing characters and circumstances, they understand many genres of film but have a special liking for film noir and comedy. Although they don't always do well at the box office they have a loyal cult following and deservedly so.
In recent years they seem to have concentrated their efforts on big Hollywood comedies which lack the quirkiness they are normally attributed, or at least provide a more mainstream, toned down version. Their earlier work is fantastic from Blood Simple through Miller's Crossing to O' brother Where Art Thou they have produced some excellent films each featuring a beautifully constructed colourful world of their own invention.
